5 inches closer to heaven

I think of myself as someone who carefully contemplates my purchases. I see something, it starts to grow on me, and I think about how it will fit into my wardrobe/home/life until I’m positive it needs to be there.* The upside of this is that I now favour quality over quantity, and have a carefully considered wardrobe where everything works together. The downside of course being that sometimes I fall for things that are so highly sought after that by the time i’ve realised I need it in my life, it’s often completely sold out.

I thus have a tendency to obsess over said items and hunt them down until I find them (sometimes this can take years, but I refuse to give up until it’s mine). And because I choose things because I love them and I think they say a little something about me, I don’t mind that they’re often a season or two old by the time they come to me.

These amaaazing Coco Chanel-esque platforms have been on my wishlist since pondering them last December. It’s taken a while, but they’re finally mine – and aren’t they beauties? Plus, they elevate me to 6 foot.** I have to say, the world looks different up there as a tall person (impostor or otherwise)!

As they say, the higher the heel, the closer to heaven.

Are you a considered or impulsive shopper? And I’m curious, does anyone else have long wishlists of things they won’t stop hunting for until they get them?

* a habit which took me some time to hone – I used to buy things for a quick thrill or because they were on sale. Because I buy far less these days, it means I can purchase Chanel and Sass & Bide without spending a penny more than frequent blowouts in cheaper stores.

** which the Clever Boyfriend is, understandably, somewhat disturbed by – he likes that I’m generally smaller than him

    • Audrey – they were originally from Topshop Boutique (which can be found online), but sold out in a nanosecond. Finally found them on ebay after months of stalking…

    • Totally agree about the false economy – I say this all the time (usually to the boyfriend when he balks at the price of something i’ve bought). If you have 5 expensive things that you wear all the time you will always look better than having 40 cheap things you wear occasionally – and they will last forever.

However I think it’s perfectly ok to throw in a few cheap impulse buys to mix things up, provided you have a solid, quality base.

  1. Those are amazing!! I actually have several wish lists. One is stuff I need immediately, another is stuff I want (not need) and then the longest one is the stuff I’ll always want (classics) like hermes, ps1, birkin, etc… One can dream right???

  2. I’m the same with shopping and it’s become slightly compulsive. I’m on the hunt for four(ish) year old Chloe Silverado wedges from one of Pheobe Philo’s last collections.

Those shoes are AMAZING. I’m sure they’d elevate any outfit you wear (no pun intended)!

  3. Those shoes are incredibly beautiful. Chanel, I assume?

I veer more towards your practices when it comes to buying, although I’m probably not quite as restrained. I think carefully about each purchase – how it will fit with what I already own, when and how I would wear it, etc – and like you, this also results in some of my desired items no longer being available by the time I decide I desire them.

I find my worst purchases are those I buy when I just really want to buy something, regardless of what it is. Or when I’m shopping with people far more purchase-happy than I. After a period of restraint, their habits will start to rub off.

  4. I have obsessed over the topshop Parisian shoes ever since I seen them and am still desperately trying to find a pair with no luck at all :(
