How to Dress for a Confused Summer

It seems that while the rest of the Northern Hemisphere is experiencing a heatwave, the English summer is currently on vacation in the South of France. Since I refuse to let the grey skies get me down, I’ve taken to pretending that it’s actually September and am thus doing a weird sartorial tango that flits somewhere between breezy summer whites and preppy autumnal layers.

I’ve mostly been in denial about the rainy skies and have been gadding about in florals and pastels galore, but some days practicality reigns supreme (yes, even for me!). I actually took these shots for my Jimmy Choo campaign back in May (the sky was grey that day too), but variations on this same look have been on high rotation for all manner of weekend errands, coffee dates, trips to the bookstore and bike rides since then on days when only a jacket, rather than a bottle of SPF, will do.

My motto for confused weather? Breton stripes, fun heels sunglasses and a blazer and you’re good to go! Wearing: Vintage Ralph Lauren blazer, Current/Elliott boyfriend jeans (old, but similar style here), Chanel bag, Boden top, Michael Kors watch, Mimco bow cuff and necklace, Jimmy Choo heels (on loan) and sunglasses (c/o).

I hope the sun is shining in your part of the world! And rain or shine, I’d love to know what you’re wearing this summer?

Love, Miss B xx

  1. Miserable ol’ blighty eh, it was quite amusing over the weekend, wishing everyone a happy first of july and at the same time grabbing an umbrella, an extra sweater and scarf before heading out. I am still in hope that the sun will come out soon though and if all else fails I will-like you-pretend it’s september time, grab a pair of fabulous heels and just make the most of the weather. I love your outfit, I remember seeing these when you posted about the Jimmy Choo Campaign, this was one of my faves!

p.s. I want your bike!! xx

  2. You look great! The weather has been about 100F everyday for a couple weeks now. I can’t wait until I HAVE to wear a blazer. The sun is killing me. Do you ride your bike in those heels? I can’t manage on mine.
    Love, Evan

  3. Hi Miss B~ First of all I must say that I love, love, love your blog! I look forward to every post and I’m never disapointed! Your photos and style and simply beautiful. I’m so jealous of your wonderful bike rides through London. It all looks so amazing!! : ) Where I am in the US we are in the middle of a heat wave! It’s so hot and humid all I can hope for is that my make up doesn’t melt off me when I go outside. I’m living in cute tops and cotton capri’s (I don’t do shorts : ) Your post has really made me wish it was September. The fall is my favorite season! I really love the RL blazer! And those shoes…too good! Thank you for all your inspiration!

  4. Oh I will gladly send you some heat!!

You’re too cute B!! Love your boyfriend jeans + blazer (a go to look of mine). And I have to tell you that my mom reads your blog everyday. You’re in her “favorites” on her computer… isn’t that cute?! x

  5. I know how you feel, the weather report in the morning says rain/cloud/sun/wind all in the space of 8 hours….what are you supposed to wear for all that!
Love Bretton stripes and a blazer is a great layering idea. I think that’s my ammo for indecisive weather, layers.
Hope summer perks up. Knowing England it will arrive in October!

  6. I guess the English Summer is on vacation with German Summer… I hope they’re having a great time in France eating tons of cheese… umpf!

By the way, lovely outfit! :-)

  7. nice outfit! Love especially the blazer!! :)
well yea, I am in London for this summer and I am trying to get used to it. On Wednesday the weather changed every 5 minutes. And it also looks as it is quite cold outside and it actually isn´t… so I am slowly getting better at dressing appropriately for the weather… :) but I do hope the summer will come back at least for a little while ;)

  8. Even though it’s dreary in your part of the world, Breton stripes always make a look feel like summer! You look beautiful as always. (And I’d be happy to trade our 100-degree temperatures for just one day of chill!)

  9. I adore these shots B – you look so very stylish…and nice Choo’s!! I think this weather is making us become masters of our wardrobes…we will not admit defeat. And I’m sure that come October we’ll be mid heatwave so don’t pack those florals away too early! xxx

  10. I’m basically wearing this confused summer uniform today too! Except I’ve swapped heels for ballet flats and added by trusty A.P.C trench! I have seriously not purchased many summer pieces at all this year – no point! De x

  11. I wish I would have thought of putting together an outfit this cute back when we were having grey rainy days, but now where I live, it’s so hot you basically just want to wear as few clothes as you can without getting arrested..ah, summer.

  12. love your look, you are looking so pretty, the shoes are ooh la la … gorgeous, love everything about your look especially the bicycle … absolutely classic pics,,

  15. Yes! I needed this. I mean seriously, what does the weather think it’s doing?? It’s July for goodness’ sake! Love the heels especially :)

  16. Love the whole look but seriously obsessed with those shoes! And yes, what a confused summer it is! Humid, beautiful, raining 12 times a day…what’s a girl to do?!

  17. Aww man.. I’m in Paris, and these last few days have been absolutely miserable. Rain and cold galore.

You look fantastic – and I think this is a perfect way to cope with the unideal temps. Cuffing the jeans is such a great touch to summer-ize the outfit, while keeping the rest warm and chic.

Stripes are so in in Paris (aren’t ‘they always?) so you’d fit in remarkably here. I love your line “weird sartorial tango” …. may be my new favorite phrase. Maybe a change in blog name? hahah.

    Awesome blossom blog.

  20. I simply love your photos because you are looking very beautiful in these photos. Your handbag and sandal both are looking quite unique and beautiful and very inspired me. Thanks for the sharing..:)

  21. The weather is so opposite here! Over 100 degrees lately where I live in Cali! I was thinking about doing a post of what to wear in 100 degree weather but I think that would only consist of a bikini! lol!

Your summer will come soon enough, at least you get to dress cute! Looking fab as always! :)
