Grove Street Pearls

A Girl, A Style _ Grove Street Pearls 11

Hi lovelies! I hope you’ve all had a wonderful weekend? The Clever Boyfriend Fiance and I are just back from a trip to New York, where we spent two glorious weeks kicking off the start of summer in the best way: wandering all over the city together, having picnics in Central Park every second day, catching up with dear friends and, most importantly, having the honour of watching my BFF Nicolette marry the love of her life (obviously her wedding was epic/gorgeous/all kings of #weddinggoals).

We were blessed with the most beautiful weather whilst we were there (at least until the last two days when it rained to biblical proportions and I turned up on my friend Grace‘s doorstep in a very soggy version of this outfit), which served as an excellent excuse for hunting down the best gelato and iced lattes all over town, eating all our meals al fresco and bare legs every day (fellow English girls will, I’m sure, understand what a novelty this is in itself).

And as is my annual habit, that first promise of summer had me abandoning my preppy blazers and office-appropriate tailoring in favour of all things feminine, pink and breezy. I don’t really know how to dress as a tourist (although I’m fairly certain I was always to be found wearing just too many jewels for any New Yorker to consider me one of their own), but I do know how to dress like I’m off to my own birthday party in the park.

And really, who cares if you’re hip when you have pink Valentino and ice cream…?

Sunday Girl

A Girl, A Style _ Sunday Girl 3A Girl, A Style _ Sunday Girl 6 Summer weekends: surely two of the most beautiful words in the English language. For this, the first weekend of summer in the Northern Hemisphere, I had a blissfully relaxed schedule filled only with the sort of pleasing pastimes that make the weekend feel wonderful. On Saturday, the Clever Boyfriend and I went for bike rides and burritos at our favourite Mexican place, before a long stroll through a few of the grand colleges and a Saturday matinee at the charming little ADC theatre (if you’re in Cambridge and get a chance to see the Footlights perform, you simply must go; I guarantee they’ll have you in fits of giggles!). A Girl, A Style _ Sunday Girl 2A Girl, A Style _ Sunday Girl 7A Girl, A Style _ Sunday Girl Yesterday, I met my friend (and A Girl, A Style sidekick) Sophie for brunch at Afternoon Tease (one of my favourite little Cambridge cafés; anywhere that carries Frankie magazine, peonies on the tables and an abundance of homemade cake is alright in my book). I say brunch, but really it was one of those long, languid afternoon dates that ease into the early evening. We talked for hours and hours about good books, happiness and everything in between over the best eggs Florentine and iced coffees in town. Eventually, we tore ourselves away at closing time, parted ways and I cycled off home with that glorious summer sunshine on my face, Phoenix in my ears and a basket full of peonies. Summer Sundays, you are my favourite! A Girl, A Style _ Sunday Girl 4A Girl, A Style _ Sunday Girl 5

Jewels at Claridges

I’m not sure about you, but when I look my best I feel I can conquer anything. I know so many people who buy fabulous things (be it a party dress, gorgeous jewellery, beautiful perfume or even the finest china), only to “save them for a special occasion” and instead spend the day in things which make them feel lacklustre. In my view, life is just too short to feel anything but your best.

Personally, I’m never one to wait for an excuse to dress up or to be too concerned by dressing ‘sensibly’; you won’t ever find me in a pair of sweat pants, for example. But putting on lipstick and jewels to run errands around town, teaming a pair of jeans with some fabulous heels or creating a reason to get dressed up and have an adventure? Absolutely!

This was just an ordinary weekday in London, but by adding a swipe of red lipstick and a few extra jewels to counteract the grey skies, and swapping an office-appropriate blazer and black pumps for glittery Miu Miu heels for coffee at Claridges after work, it felt a little more fabulous.

Because, really, life is the special occasion, so why let your treasured possessions sit in a cupboard gathering dust when should enjoy them every day?

June Loves

1. Wearing: I’ve been wearing this big Kenneth Jay Lane pearl cluster necklace on constant rotation with everything from a party dress and heels to breton stripes and jeans. In fact, I think it is so perfect that I also bought two of these matching oversized pearl bracelets (one for each wrist); just like a certain Chanel version, but for less than one tenth the price.

2. Sparkling: I want to be the sort of girl who wears big, fabulous statement earrings with a chic bun, but in reality there is always too much of a sparkly statement going on around my neck for earrings to be able to compete. Instead, I prefer the teeniest tiny whimsical golden studs, like these Marc Jacobs hearts or these Bing Bang lucky charms.

3. Buying: I like clothes that look like they’d belong on either a five year old girl at a birthday party, or a cool Parisian coquette, and this silk floral print Band of Outsiders dress (also available here) seems to tick both of those boxes and is pretty perfect in my eyes. I’ll dress it up with sparkles and high sandals, dress it down with sunglasses and suede ankle boots, and take it into winter with a boyfriend blazer and opaques.

4. Small luxuries: Weekend trips to the farmers market to buy armfuls of blousy pink peonies (a few of these on the bedside table is the prettiest sight to wake up to) and the first English strawberries of the season. Perfect!

5. Play: Trooping the Colour with The Queen, weekends at the polo (hello, posh men on ponies), Cambridge ‘May Week’ soirees and games of croquet in college gardens.

6. Beauty note: June calls for tanned skin, tousled hair, pastel nails and a spritz of Jo Malone‘s orange blossom perfume (summer in a bottle).

7. On my wishlist: These impossibly gorgeous Carven blush pink silk bow heels (also on sale in scarlet red here and here) are at the very top of my wishlist (a potential souvenir when I go to Paris next month, I think…). Granted, they’re hardly practical (pink silk and English rain are hardly a good pairing), but I’ll always say ‘yes‘ to shoes that make my feet look like presents.

8. Listening to: Phoenix are the soundtrack to my summer (I can’t resist a cute French man…), and their new album Bankrupt is so catchy it is just made to accompany bike rides on golden spring evenings.

9. Watching: I’ve been struck by a wave of adolescent nostalgia of late, and have been watching all my old favourites on repeat (Dawson’s Creek, The OC, Clueless…). Highbrow: no, fun: yes!

10. For the home: Following my own advice, I’ve been all about primping my home this month, so every cupboard and space is being de-cluttered, organised and prettified (because a good cleanse is wonderful for the soul). Shoe-shopping has temporarily been replaced with buying new fluffy towels, crisp linen (I get mine here) and gorgeous new lights (I’ve just ordered this), planting lavender, mint and white geraniums on the windowsill and hanging some fresh pictures on the walls. Domestic bliss!

I hope you’re all having a lovely month! And as always, I would love to hear what your favourite things are currently (do share in the comments).
