Grove Street Pearls

Hi lovelies! I hope you’ve all had a wonderful weekend? The Clever Boyfriend Fiance and I are just back from a trip to New York, where we spent two glorious weeks kicking off the start of summer in the best way: wandering all over the city together, having picnics in Central Park every second day, catching up with dear friends and, most importantly, having the honour of watching my BFF Nicolette marry the love of her life (obviously her wedding was epic/gorgeous/all kings of #weddinggoals).

We were blessed with the most beautiful weather whilst we were there (at least until the last two days when it rained to biblical proportions and I turned up on my friend Grace‘s doorstep in a very soggy version of this outfit), which served as an excellent excuse for hunting down the best gelato and iced lattes all over town, eating all our meals al fresco and bare legs every day (fellow English girls will, I’m sure, understand what a novelty this is in itself).

And as is my annual habit, that first promise of summer had me abandoning my preppy blazers and office-appropriate tailoring in favour of all things feminine, pink and breezy. I don’t really know how to dress as a tourist (although I’m fairly certain I was always to be found wearing just too many jewels for any New Yorker to consider me one of their own), but I do know how to dress like I’m off to my own birthday party in the park.

And really, who cares if you’re hip when you have pink Valentino and ice cream…?

Birthday Cake Dates

Last weekend, I had decided to skip the Fashion Week festivities* in favour of cake and festivities with friends in London and Cambridge instead. After what felt like weeks of endless English rain, the sun was shining with all its might, the temperature was warm enough to go without a coat for a few hours, and it suddenly felt as though spring was on the way. Joy!

So I did whatever I do when I have a sunny day to myself in Cambridge and put on my favourite new dress, dusted off my Pashley for a bike ride around town and met my friend for a walk around town and belated birthday cake (I like to stretch my celebrations out as long as my friends will tolerate) at one of our favourite Cambridge cafes.

I don’t know about all of you, but I am, by this point, so bored of winter that I simply cannot take another week of dark, heavy layers so I’m injecting a little spring into my wardrobe in the form of girly dresses (teamed with a coat and tights instead of bare legs and a tan), bright lipstick and fun accessories.

I bought this RED Valentino dress (a birthday present to myself and the latest addition to my growing collection from the label) a couple of weeks ago in the Net-a-Porter sale and already I’ve been wearing it repeatedly with a sharp jacket, tights, a beret and this darling glittery Lulu Guinness clutch which has been on permanent rotation this month.

December in Pictures

Chasing away the winter blues with an abundance of roses and small pleasures. Jo Malone Red Roses perfume on grey days. Pink boxes filled with new Agent Provocateur loveliness. The most delicious truffles from Charbonnel et Walker‘s charming little Mayfair boutique (available in the US here). Playing in the last of the autumn leaves in Cambridge college gardens. Hot chocolate dates at tiny cafes. Fuelling my RED Valentino addiction with this dress that makes me want to twirl. Nighttime walks beneath the twinkling Christmas lights of Mayfair. Window-shopping after dark + dreaming of a wardrobe full of Miu Miu heels. Afternoon tea at Laduree with my girl Aimee.

Decking the halls for the holidays + filling my home with festive sparkle. My new Louboutin heels that look like presents for my feet. Pink champagne and cocktail hour by the tree. The sounds of the Rat Pack Christmas album. Kate Spade cocktail rings + J. Crew crystal earrings. Curling up with tea and Gatsby on rainy evenings. Fairy lights + golden owl candles from Anthropologie. Wrapping presents. Wearing these sequinned heels to holiday parties. A shiny new bow purse from Kate Spade. Gingerbread men. Christmas movie marathons.

London all dressed up for the season. Festive sparkle and department store Christmas windows on Oxford Street. Sale shopping at Selfridges. Mulberry’s fairy tale pop-up at Harrods. Wandering through Trafalgar Square and the National Gallery after work. An evening at The Nutcracker (my favourite annual Christmas tradition). Old London glamour and the best lobster rolls in town at The Delaunay. Stella McCartney‘s Christmas lights (and this pink silk dress of dreams). Cristmas loveliness with family. Wintery walks around Mayfair. The glow of The Ritz at sundown.

I hope you all had a wonderful end to 2013!

Valentino Dresses and Autumn Leaves

A couple of weeks ago, I had just returned from New York and was in need of caffeine and a girl date to help overcome my jetlag. My friend had just received some excellent news, so I put on my favourite new dress and we met for hot cocoa and cake at a charming new café in Cambridge to celebrate.

As it was such a beautiful day and Cambridge was looking so splendid in all it’s autumnal glory, we walked through the colleges after lunch to savour those perfect last moments of autumn. The last of the leaves seemed to be swirling on the breeze and falling that weekend, blanketing all the college gardens in a carpet of red and gold.

As usual, we had my friend’s secret fellows garden all to ourselves (a heavenly escape from the tourists in the form of an acre of sprawling lawns and manicured English flower gardens and a canopy of old trees behind her grand college), so there was only one thing to do: act like children and throw autumn leaves at each other for the rest of the afternoon.

This dress had been on my wishlist for months and months (I have a RED Valentino addiction), so I finally bought it the moment it went on sale on Shopbop. I realise that a Valentino dress this special should really be reserved for dinner at nice restaurants and birthday parties and nights at the theatre rather than throwing leaves and twirling through Cambridge colleges, but I live by the motto that one’s favourite things should be enjoyed every day. So – true to my word – I wore it to the museum and for a rainy afternoon on the Upper East Side when I was in New York a few weeks ago, for a long walk through Central Park, at brunch with my friend at the Delaunay in London, paired with a black tuxedo jacket at the office, and just about everywhere in between.

Because really, life feels that little bit more wonderful when you’re wearing a dress that makes you want to twirl.

Do you save your favourite things for special occasions, or do you make your own excuse to dress up?
