At The Flower Market

There are few simple pleasures I love more than a trip to the florist to pick up a big bunch of fragrant blooms (as anyone who follows me on Instagram will know). Since moving to Cambridge, a weekly trip to the flower stall at the market has become one of my favourite rituals at the end of the work week.

To me, those flowers are so intrinsically linked with happy memories and moments throughout my life, that it is a luxury I’m happy to indulge (I’d take a bunch of roses over a coffee, any day). Growing up in Australia, we had a beautiful English garden which exploded with perfumed blossoms each season, and some of my happiest days were spent hosting tea parties under the peach trees for my (usually imaginary) friends, helping my father tend to the flower beds, and collecting armfuls of fragrant roses, hydrangeas bluebells and ranunculus with my mother to bring inside.

Although I don’t have a garden here in Cambridge, it is a tradition I try to maintain to this day. Each week, I’ll pop to the flower stall before a massage and date night with the Clever Boyfriend on Friday evenings, or cycle to the market early on a Saturday morning for coffee, flowers and long chats about life with my best friend (we’ve been friends for 16 years, and by some wonderful stroke of fate, we have always seemed to end up in the same places in the world at the same time ever since and now both currently call Cambridge home).

Regardless of how hectic my week has been, life always just feels wonderful again after these weekends filled with love, friendship and those beautiful flowers.

Do you have any small pleasures you adore which always seem bring about happy moments? I would love to hear!

Cambridge weekend rituals: brunch, bookshops and shopping at the farmer’s market. Gossip + red velvet cupcakes with my girlfriends. Playing tourist in Cambridge with Nicolette and Ali. Weekend walks through the colleges. The banks of the River Cam awash with a sea of sunshine yellow daffodils. Wearing this glittery Lulu Guinness clutch with everything. Jazz + bespoke apricot martinis at my favourite secret Cambridge speakeasy. Getting all dressed up for grand college dinners with the Clever Boyfriend. Ball skirts and shoes that make my feet look like presents.

Wandering the cherry blossom-lined pastel streets of Notting Hill. Ottolenghi desserts for lunch and treasure-hunting vintage jewels and tea sets on Portobello Road with Nicolette. Decadent dinner dates with my favourite girls. Pear bellinis and lobster everything at Bob Bob Ricard. Press for champagne! Lunchtime walks around Westminster in the sunshine. Much-needed primping at my favourite hair salon (that feels more like going to a fancy tea party). Rose petal macarons from Laduree. A rainbow of Manolo princess shoes at Liberty (that I can’t stop thinking about). Planning spring adventures to new European cities.

I hope you all had a wonderful March!

Spring Forward

Oh, springtime, how I adore you! I never fully appreciated the magic of this season until I moved from Australia to England, and had to learn what winter really is. In Europe, the clocks go forward this weekend (hello long, golden evenings!) and needless to say, the arrival of blue skies and the sight of spring flowers bursting through the ground has me positively giddy with joy.

There is something about the changing of the seasons that feels so fresh; full of anticipation and possibility. After the long winter, I’m ready to welcome the season and make the most of these glorious days. For me, I’m starting it as I mean to go on: this weekend is all about spring cleaning my home from top to bottom until it sparkles, lazy brunch dates, planning weekend adventures with my love (Paris and Vienna, oh my!), bike rides down fragrant blossom-lined streets and buying more bunches of scented flowers than is necessary.

It’s a glorious new season, and it feels so wonderful!

June in Pictures

Picnics in the park whenever the sky is blue. Watching the clouds drift by. Blossoms, sunshine and springtime pastels. Weekend roadtrips. The British seaside. Striped sunloungers and fair rides. Brighton Pier. The smell of sunscreen, salty air and fish and chips. Ice cream on hot days. The first roses of the summer bursting into bloom. Playing tourist in London. Afternoons at the museums. Trooping the Colour with The Queen and her royal horseguards.

Multiple afternoon tea and cocktail dates in the most opulent surroundings at The Gilbert Scott at The St Pancras Renaissance (where I can hop straight off the Cambridge Express and be in a booth with a pear cocktail in hand 3 minutes later). Pretending to be a Spice Girl on the grand staircase with Dearne. Glittery heels and oversized pearls when the sky outside is dreary. Decadent vices (in the form of Charbonnel et Walker rose and violet truffles, like an English garden in a perfect little chocolate). June pursuits. At the polo with Coast. Pimms and posh men on ponies. Stomping the divots in Marc Jacobs bow heels (because shoes with bows always win over sensible footwear anyway). Games of croquet in the garden. Lunchtime strolls around the grand backstreets of Westminster.

Weekly trips to the farmers market for big bunches of pink peonies and fragrant lilacs. Throwing open all the windows and spring cleaning. Doing a little diy art for my walls. Cambridge May week fireworks, balls and garden parties before the students leave for the summer. The sound of bumblebees happily buzzing in the gardens. The cobbled streets looking magical bathed in golden sunsets. Evening bike rides. Dining al fresco and watching the world go by. English strawberries and all the flavours of summer. A pop of summery colour in the form of coral Estee Lauder hues and fuschia Prada heels.

I hope you all had a wonderful month!
