While I have unstoppable tendencies to pile on too many jewels and accessories (all at once), and can be found most lunchtimes fantasising over the most beautifully frothy and impractical clothes on Net-a-Porter from my desk, none of these extravagant sartorial whims work without a set of good quality staples to anchor the whole thing (unless of course eccentric cat lady is the look you’re aiming for). Get these staples right, and everything else will work almost by itself. These items are the essentials that are the building blocks of my wardrobe, and which I think should be everyone’s essentials. If you are weighing up costs, always scrimp on the seasonal trends and spend the most you can afford on good-quality foundation pieces instead.
Here are the ten wardrobe essentials I couldn’t live without (and which I’m always on the quest for the ‘perfect’ version of):
1. The Perfectly-Cut Jackets: I’m particularly partial to blazers myself (either mannish and black, or preppy crested colegiate blazers), and I’m forever on the quest for the perfect tuxedo jacket (a la Yves Saint Laurent’s Le Smoking), but I also love little vintage silk and lace bed jackets, or fur (faux or vintage) styles. Jackets pull any outfit together, and sharpen up even the floatiest of tops.
2. The Dark, Slim Jeans: Everyone needs a pair of jeans that they can pull on whenever they don’t know what else to wear. They right pair should be flattering; that is, lift the bottom, not be too tight at the waist (there is nothing worse than muffin top), and slim through the leg (but not so tight that sitting down is a problem). They should work either dressed-down with a top for weekend casual, or dressed up with killer heels and a tuxedo blazer. While other denim styles will come into fashion, these are the classics that will always work. Surely finding the perfect jeans is one of the eternal sartorial quests.
3. The Tailored Pants: Whether crisp and skinny, mannish and rolled at the ankles, wide-legged and high waisted, or cropped at the ankles, these are essentials for professional situations. While I shun boring suits and corporate dress codes (despite my serious Westminster day job), these will always work when the dress code calls for something smart. Wear with a silk shirt, a pretty white blouse, a plain tee and a statement necklace, and either fantastic heels or patent ballet flats.
4. The Perfect Tee: The perfect tee should be luxuriously soft and skim over the body (slouchy and slightly loose if preferable to second-skin tight). Pure white, black, grey marle and navy breton-stripes are eternally chic. Good quality, basic tees make even my most ridiculous layers of jewels look acceptable (a super-luxe statement necklace looks effortlessly cool), and work as well in the office as they do on sloth-like Sundays.
5. The Smart Shirt or Feminine Blouses: Collared Shirts (I love them in either crisp white or preppy blue cotton with French cuffs or sheer silk or lace) and beautiful, silky blouses are both wonderful versatile. Team them with jeans, tailored pants, tailored shorts or skirts and they will take you everywhere and are enormously easy to personalise (I love wearing my cotton versions with a bow tied at the neck, or brooches pinned to the collar).
6. The Happy Dress: Absolutely everyone needs a dress that they can throw on when all else fails, and which makes them feel absolutely wonderful every time. I have two (similar styles – one in black by DKNY and one in white by Lover) that seem to magically look good in practically every scenario; whether I put them on first thing on a Saturday morning, for a meeting at the office, for a date with the boyfriend, or to drinks with friends, I always feel comfortable, fun and occasion-appropriate.
7. The Ready-to-Party Dress: Fairly self-explanatory. But like the Happy Dress, every woman should own a party dress that instantly says “Hello, I’m exploding with fun and I’d like a cocktail please!”. Key to the party dress is that it should be on the right side of sexy (ie. chic and fun, never trashy).
8. The Flirty Skirt: Like most of the other essentials, the right skirt should be able to be dressed up or down, depending on the occasion. My current favourite go-with-everything version is an (almost) mini lantern-shaped version by Carven, and I take it from geek cheek (with a collegiate tee, tuxedo blazer, black bow heels and glasses) to work-appropriate (with a tucked in blouse) to casual (with breton strips and Isabel Marant boots) to fashion party (with a brooch-encrusted blazer). It should be fun, versatile, and comfortable enough (I personally despite pencil skirts for the fact they’re impossible to actually sit down in).
9. The Winter Coat: I’m stubbornly pretending that winter is months off, so coats remain the last thing on my mind. But that said, one cannot survive a northern hemisphere winter without one (this may sound silly, but in Australia, coats are strictly an optional extra), and given it is to be worn practically every day for several months, it might as well be one you madly love! Military or trench coat styles flatter all shapes and work with most outfits, while fur or cocoon coats work on petite frames. Personally, I’m still on the hunt for the perfect cape coat (any tips?). Black is predictale but it works, and it absolutely must be a good quality, thick wool (cheap wool is not only less warm, but it will pill and fall apart in no time) or, if in warmer climes, a thick cotton. Mine is See by Chloe, and although it doesn’t look wildly exciting, it still looks flawless and works with every outfit.
10. The Transformative Underwear: Without this, everything else looks bad. It must be supportive, impeccably-cut (so it stays where it’s supposed to), and pretty enough that you feel fabulous regardless of what you’re wearing on top. I like Elle McPherson and Pleasure State for everyday loveliness, Stella McCartney and Topshop for fun knickers, and Agent Provocateur.
What are your essentials? Have you found the perfect basics that you couldn’t dress without?
Love, Miss B xx

Good list, but best for young, thin and those with deep wallets. Those of us at at a different age and not so tiny or slim have our own issues.
So my essentials (sigh) also include Spanx or similar bodywear and shapewear (yes, they make a difference); cashmere cardigan/turtlenecks (black and or navy); a few scarves that make anything look better (Hermes carres, for me) and add color, detail and style to the basics; a really well-cut and flattering bathing suit (hell to find, golden to own).
I would actually describe my accessories as my basics, as I can’t leave the house without great earrings and rings. One of my basics is a linen oversized shirt from Replay that looks like a denim workman’s shirt from the 1930s. I wear it as a summer jacket and even as a bathing suit coverup.
I found my perfect cape at a consignment shop; it’s Jaeger, reversible boiled wool, camel one side, black the other.

The list was her personal list – it was merely to show her key pieces – not pieces she advises people to buy and you dont need deep pockets to build a wardrobe similar to that described in the piece. Good hunting skills are essential these days and from the sound of the vintage pieces you own – you’ve got those skills to find a bargin. The only problem I find now is the likes of Reiss and Zara seem to be slowly increasing their prices due to the huge influx of business thanks to the enormous amount of coverage of Kate the greats wardrobe of late. And the likes of H&M and Topshop are letting the standards of their clothes fall hugely and dont even get me started on the quality of Topman….its disgraceful. Sir Philip if you read…..time to stop ripping off your customers and make better quality clothes. *he says as he gets off his speaking box*

Thank you so much for your input – and I always love seeing a healthy discussion in the comments section on here!
But you are right, I’m not being a dictator and saying people must rush out and buy these items. Merely pointing out that for me, they pull everything together, and I genuinely think that when adapted to suit personal tastes, these are the key pieces that work on everyone. Likewise, they need not be expensive (heck, I don’t have the budget to buy my ‘basic’ blazers at Balenciaga!), but if you’re going to spend money on any items, these should be the ones to hunt for.
Also completely agree re: Reiss and Topshop. I think the quality of Reiss and Whistles is still superb, but I am noticing a steady price increase season upon season (I tend to pick up one piece full price every season or year, then another in the sale – so it’s not too expensive overall). And while Topshop is still affordable, I do notice the difference in quality (especially with jeans – which look great when brand new, but never seem to last like more expensive brands).
Nonetheless, I hope this (and my upcoming) guide is useful to you all!

Good point about many items only working on those who are young and thin – but I did try to ensure all these items work at any age (and each one is adaptable to suit personal taste) – I should also point out that I’m neither particularly rich, nor thin 😉
And yes, accessories are definitely my essetials too (look out for upcoming posts on these) – though there’s no point having beautiful accessories on top if what you’re wearing underneath is tatty or unflattering.
Thanks as always for your comments 🙂

Fab At Any Age says
I have a huge obsession with wardrobe staples and believe that they should work at any age. Love the comments about the High Street in the comment above, so true.
agirlastyle says
Absolutely agree – with a few minor tweaks (for age or personal taste), the same key wardrobe staples should work for any age, regardless of whichever fashion trend is currently coming or going. These are the pieces that allow all those other trends to ‘make sense’ season after season.

You have two dresses and a skirt on here… far to outrageous for me! I will keep the party dress and replace the other two with another pair of jeans (never enough) and a great basic cardigan (preferably cotton/cashmere).
Love this list though. Please let the next one be about essential shoes?
Emily X
agirlastyle says
I was hesitant about including two dresses – but feel everyone should have a party/occasion dress 😉 And yes, a cardigan is a fantastic essential (should have included this actually – sorry for missing it!)
And yes, look out for accessories (including an entire one on shoes) in upcoming posts!

Impeccable, as usual. As for me, I would add to your list a nice classic trench (especially if you live in England!) in black or beige and a cashmere cardi,to be worn with jeans or with a smart dress to understate it. Also I’m obsessed with marinière tees (so chic!) and white shirts. I get them custom made by man’s tailors. I know it sounds disgustingly posh, but it’s not more expensive than a similar item from most pret-a-porter brands, and you will own an item that is truly classy and unique.
Can’t wait for a post about shoes and accessories!
agirlastyle says
Thank you so much. And yes, the trench is an essential (included under ‘coats’ for me – though I’m personally still searching for my perfect ‘one’), and I LOVE a good breton/mariniere tee and crisp white shirt. Have never actually thought to have them custom made, but thank you for the wonderful idea! If you know anywhere in London that does this, do let me know!

This is a great list, and I think it works for any age and any budget. The key is using your own interpretation for each item.
For example, “tailored pants” can even be tailored denim if your lifestyle is more casual. For someone who lives in Southern California, a winter coat might mean a light pea coat.
It’s all about your own lifestyle, budget and preferences.
agirlastyle says
Precisely! I’ve thought long and hard to get it down to the items that can work for everyone (though as many have pointed out, I should probably have included a cardigan, rather than two dresses). With adaptation, these items really can work for most situations/budgets/age brackets. Thank you so much for your thoughts

Love your little sketch darling. Great list. I agree with all it, I love essentials, in regards to menswear I tend to stick to essentials. It’s always good to build your wardrobe about the essentials – add the statements, and trend pieces later ha! x
agirlastyle says
Thank you so much! And perhaps I need to do a menswear version too (though really, you’re the expert on this, not me!)

Surely an Hermes scarf IS for those with a deep wallet eh, broadsideblog?!

Great list. I’m looking for the perfect coat at the moment. I can feel the fall is in the air (unfortunately) and since I always freezing I always dream about the perfect coat which will make me look stylish but keep me warm aswell

I’ve just bought the Vanessa Bruno coat she’s done for La Redoute. Have a look on their website. It’s quite heavy and warm and really stylish. Great value. Word of warning – it comes up big ( her stuff is usually on the small side)

Great list! I’m on the hunt for a new go-to party dress 🙂
Fiona says
So interesting: I would have included the shirt and jeans when I was younger and thinner; now I’m always on the look-out for more tunic-like tops to wear with shorter trousers. That’s my uniform, alternated with simple Marni-type dresses with thick tights. I put jackets (absolutely essential, I agree) and/or cardigans over the top, long-sleeved ( usually stripey!) tops underneath and wear boots, loafers or flat pumps and then ring the changes with scarves and big necklaces, like you. You will probably have noticed that winter dressing tends to come much more easily to me than summer does! When I was younger, I used to dress like a poorer and less pretty version of Alexa Chung; love that androgyny.

Wow, that’s a great sketch u did!! I’ve seen your past sketches too and they’re amazing!!!
I couldn’t agree more with your list of wardrobe essentials, esp the jeans and party dress part;) Although i must have heels, not sure if that counts as a wardrobe essential? lol
Great post!

Oh, I love your selection of items! This is exactly the sort of thing I’m thinking about right now. Totally feel there are some massive gaping holes in my wardrobe… and it’s the basic items that are missing! Just picked up a pair of great dark skinny jeans in the US and the perfect slouchy white t-shirt. Next on my list is a black leather jacket. xx
TheUrbanMum says
I do love your list and most certainly agree it is for all ages and stages. With a little tweaking here and there. Le Smoking (pants and jacket) could take you around the globe looking perfect for all occasions no matter yr size or budget. A little debate is good for the soul… Thank you for this post. X

My pleasure! And thank you for your comments. You are absolutely right, that outfit could take you anywhere!

I like your list as it’s a bit different from other lists I’ve seen before. My wardrobe usually is a chaos, I buy things I like but sometimes are difficult to combine. What I don’t like about wardrobe essentials and to invest some money on quality clothes is that one day you will find that your body is changing and you can’t wear this beautiful dress you love anymore because now it is too small to fit you!
I also have a question, how long do yo wear your clothes? I have some pieces in my wardrobe since more than 10 years ago, don´t know if it is a lot of time or not.
(Sorry if there’s any mistake in my english). 🙂
agirlastyle says
Thank you! And as to how long I wear my clothes, I don’t think there is a specific limit. While obviously I stop wearing things when they’ve worn out, I’ve got things in my wardrobe that I’ve had 10 years and still love just as much as when I bought them. The secret to getting longevity out of your wardrobe is to invest in good quality in the first place (cheap things rarely last), and to only buy that which you truly love. Hope this helps!

I know that this doesnt necessarily fall into the category of “trendy” essentials, but I do think that cute sleepwear is a vital part of any woman’s closet. I feel it is important to feel feminine and elegant, even when you’re relaxing at home! I would love for you to do a piece on pajamas 🙂

I hadn’t thought about how essential pjs are but you’re right they are pretty important.
My pjs are probably the worst taken care of department of my wardrobe…haha

A happy dress, that is such a great idea. I have a happy headband but not a dress – I’ll have to look into investing in one 😛
I just got supportive underwear and you’re right they are a GOD SEND. The amount of confidence I get knowing my stomach is being taken care of is amazing.

Great list, you’ve covered all the basic essentials every girl needs. I disagree about the list being solely for young, thin and wealthy shoppers, I don’t see how any of the pieces you’ve listed couldn’t be adapted for a curvier or more mature women while the high street offers all these essentials as well as higher end brands. Lovely blog and I think it’s great how you reply to all your followers, it’s a really nice thing that most bloggers don’t bother with anymore! 🙂 x

Thank you so much! And I completely agree – these are the essentials that by and large can work for any woman, regardless of her age, size and budget.

Firstly I love your essentials list, it suited me and my style so much!
Secondly I agree with Alex, it is so great to see you replying to your comments, so many bloggers don’t bother unless you are a big-name, so props to you!
Also, it’s great to see some guys commenting on your blog! I think there needs to be more men chiming in on what they think, especially in the style-blogger world, which seems to be dominated by women.
Keep it up boys!
Ha, I have had my rant now, thanks again for the great post 😀

This is such a Godsend for a out-of-the-loop mom (ahem me!). I love jackets and jeans too, but am getting a bit fed up of the whole mom on the go look 24/7…Am on the lookout for a dress so will not stop until I find a ‘happy’ one- you have inspired me!!

Considering this post and having wandered onto your blog with a distinct name I’m wondering if this is the same Byrony of the former project Off the Rail, one of my all-time favorite reads and re-reads. Whichever it is or isn’t yeah for finding another great thoughtful blog that’s not all about buying, buying, buying and makes me think 🙂

Thank-you so much! I was having a quarter-life fashion crisis and I’m now smiling and can’t wait to rebuild my wardrobe on classic foundations, wonderful advice!

I like your list, it’s a whole lot more reasonable and encompassing than a lot of the essentials lists out there. And I don’t think you need to have deep pockets or be slim to have a similar list of your own. You just have to shop smart. For instance, I love agent provocateur too. Yes, it’s expensive, but I signed up to their mailing list and so I know when their sales are. The prices at their 70% off and final reduction sales are really good for things that are really beautiful and fit well. Plus they have the best returns policy I have ever seen, if whatever you ordered did not fit etc.
