London Fashion Week: Highlights From Day 4

Burberry Prorsum Autumn/Winter ’11/’12 (with Emmanuelle Alt – French Vogue’s new Editor in Chief – looking on)

Day 4 was noteable for a number of reasons, in particular:

1) Against all laws of biology, I’d somehow adapted to the 14 hours days of back-to-back shows and was being fuelled solely on vats of caffeine and the pain of wearing 11cm Isabel Marant heels for hours on end, in lieu of actual sleep.

2) With the arrival of all the world’s fashion editors, alphas and first ladies (my celebrities), my fascination for people-watching was satiated in a superb guest-list cocktail of incredible sartorial ensebles, shiny chauffeured limosines, and that fragrant aura that only exists around those who exude incredible amounts of power.

See point 2. Although the first image of Scott & Garance was actually a mistake (I was simply testing the lighting on my camera & then noticed they were in the background), I abandoned all dignity and got a bit pap-happy when seeing Queen Wintour at such close-proximity at Christopher Kane.

3) Post-show pondering along the lines of: is it sometimes better to continue being creative, even if it means getting it slightly wrong, or to instead stick to what you’re good at? In the case of Erdem, Christopher Kane, and Burberry – a few of my favourite shows from seasons past – I’d built in my own mind so much hype and anticipation for their shows that even though they were beautiful, I left not knowing whether to be disappointed that they had gone in such different directions, or happy that they were continuing to experiment. On the other hand, Mary Katrantzou and Holly Fulton essentially both showed variations of their collections from last season, but I smiled the whole way through. How long before a recognisable signature theme simply becomes repetitive?

4) The instant the serious ‘pinch me!’ moment of the week struck: when the snow shower began to fall* on the finale at Burberry Prorsum (renowned in the industry as the Impenetrable Fortress of London Fashion Week, ie. it’s easier to get tickets to the Royal Wedding than it is to a Burberry show…), I glanced over at the front row crammed full of industry names I worshipped, and thought, ‘I’m actually here!’

5) Last, but certainly not least – this day also marked the one year anniversary of me starting A Girl, A Style. I can’t think of a better way to have celebrated than with a wave from Samantha Cameron and an invite to a Burberry show!

On that note, ginormous amounts of love and appreciation to each and every one of you for continuing to read and support this blog. I can’t tell you enough how much your lovely comments and emails each day bring a smile to my face. So, thank you!

Love, Miss B xx

* In case you were wondering, this isn’t just one of my flowery expressions; Christopher Bailey created an actual snow storm which drifted slowly onto the audience as though from a wintery night sky

  1. you go girl great write up as I feel I am there, and thank you for your honesty about the shows, as much as I am doing a write up on most of the shows I went to, I am choosing to leave out a few just because it was too similar to their season before, I don’t know why but some designers are playing it too safe,

  2. Oh wow Miss B!! Loved reading this…your enthusiasm for what you experienced is infectious whilst you still retain an honesty and integrity in how you write about it all. Great start spotting.. and yes you’re right… they are our stars and whenever I see one, I still have to pinch myself.
And as for Burberry.. wow… Cherish that one my sweet! xxx
