A Girl, A Style

New York: Style and the City pt.2

Uncategorized 28 August 2010

17

Continuing from yesterday’s post, here is my roundup of New York and its neighbourhood style.

SOHO

The mecca of all things artistically gritty. Hipsters and hip hop. Graffiti and galleries. Designers and daydreamers. Artists, and students. Expressos and entrepreneurs. Prince Street. Opening Ceremony. Models rushing past on their way to castings. Dean & Deluca on Broadway. Cobbled streets.

UPPER EAST SIDE

Galleristas and socialites. Oligarchs and aristocrats. Doyennes and debutantes. Central Park and the Museum Mile. Gloved doormen and gilded foyers. Leafy streets and tiny dogs. The Met steps. Yummy mummies and English nannies. Prep schools and gossip girls. Antiques and jewels. Park Avenue princesses.

EAST VILLAGE/LOWER EAST SIDE

The young and the cool. Alexander Wang-clad hipsters. Tomboys and bicycles. Clinton Street bakeries. Wine bars and baristas. Chinatown. Synagogues. Tattoo parlours. The Bowery Ballroom. Movie sets and bright young things.

What do you make of street style? Do you think areas are influenced by their residents, or the other way around?

Love, Miss B xx

I think street style is the most important fashion influence. It`s great how quite normal people can inspire designers and firts and formost other people to dress up, couse style is a very personal thing 🙂
Lovely pictures! I envy you so much… I would love to go to NY, only been there once for a couple of hours…

i thnk at first the people influence the area, and then over time it is compounded as the norm. If you were a fully fledged New-Yorker which area would you fit? or want to? x

What a brilliant round-up! I’ve never been to New York so hearing the names of all the areas always sounded like some fabulous foreign language to me. Thankyou for bringing them to life 🙂 xx

Oh, lovely! There’s no place like NYC. <3

Love your collection of photos, here… and your writing – (WOW) – encapsulates that great city so well.

I think that, absolutely , the area is first influenced by their residents, and then over time it's both.

There's a woman photographer that spent much of her career photographing people in New York City. I skimmed the book almost a year ago, and her name alludes me… anyway, the photos are fantastic. <3 If you're interested in the social aspect of NYC, and photography, let me know and I can check on that book. 😉

i’ve spent many a wonderful afternoon in the east village, even though its not necessarily my style. i think the best thing about new york is how much of a melting pot it really is. something for everyone!

I’m loving your New York round-ups – I get a real sense of the place again just reading a few lines! And don’t even get me started on Dean & Deluca… that is a shop I could live in. We stayed at the Soho Grand and so glad we did – to look up town and see that skyline.. my heart still skips a beat just thinking about it! xxx

Yo CW – that’s actually one of my favourite areas! The only reason it’s not included here is because I didn’t get there this time and thus don’t have any pictures, oops.

      See you around LFW?

      B xx
