A Girl, A Style

Oh, I Do Like To Be Beside The Seaside!

Travel 10 July 2011

20

Last weekend, I went to spend the weekend with one of my favourite blog friends, the divine Amanda (aka The Online Stylist), in Dorset. On Saturday, there were picnics, walks around castles, cocktails at the harbour and generally much giddy excitement. But on Sunday, when the sun was polite enough to be shining as hard as it could, we did what any self respecting girl from Australia would do, and made for the beach (it would have simply been rude not to).

So without further ado, we all bundled into the car, seaside-bound. I’m not sure who was more excited when we arrived: Amanda’s adorable little daughter – who made straight for the ice cream man – or me, who squealed at the sight of all the beach huts beneath the cornflower blue sky and made a beeline straight for the sand. And yes, I’m probably the only person in the world who thinks it appropriate to wear Marc Jacobs heels to the seaside, but to be honest I always kick my shoes of the instant I spot the sand, so it really doesn’t matter (besides, these heels are by now so loveworn that they are as comfortable as slippers).

Wearing: pink linen shorts (River Island, would you believe!), vintage silk and lace top, vintage London souvenir scarf (worn around wrist), Mimco bangle, vintage butterfly sunglasses, Marc Jacobs bow heels, Chanel yellow Mimosa nails (the only colour that would do for a day at the beach).

Although the dark sand and pebbles of the beaches here can’t compare to the gloriously fluffy white sand & neon blue waters of those I grew up with in Australia, there is something so gloriously fun and nostalgic about the English seaside. I love the colours of the little wooden beach huts that line the sand, the sound of ice cream vans, the lolly-coloured beach umbrellas and chuckling at the sight of pasty Englishmen lying bare-chested, already so sunburnt they look like skinny lobsters, on their towels (if you even attempted this in Australia, you would probably die of skin cancer in an hour). And no matter where in the world you find yourself, there are simply few feelings as lovely as the thrill of kicking of your shoes and running to the shore to feel the warm sand beneath your toes.

What are some of the best beaches you’ve ever been to?

Love, Miss B xx

Oh I love the seaside <3 I'm not one for lying on the beach in my bikini all day, but I love having long walks on the beach, esp when it's really quiet and evenings at the beach are, of course, the absolute best ๐Ÿ™‚
These pictures are so gorgeous as well, I looove! x

    Yum.

The beach at Easthampton, NY is a lovely one. The black sand beaches of New Zealand were amazing. I like the beaches of the Cote d’Azur — even if most of them are rocks! And those of the Toronto Islands — a mere 20-minute ferry ride and you feel you’ve traveled for hours.

I honestly can’t recommed the beaches of Sardinia enough! We went to a secluded beach called ‘Cala Luna’ which is only accessible by boat or by hiking and it was jaw droppingly beautiful. It’s set on a back drop of limestone cliffs and lots of vegetation and is like being on the set of a film. Other than Sardinia (I’m already planning my next holiday there) I really like Pampelonne beach in Saint Tropez (it’s sandy and great for people watching). De x

It was such a pleasure to have you with us for the weekend B – you were a complete hit with all three members of The Online Stylist family! Your pics are gorgeous and I think Mr OLS was quite in awe of your photography skills. I dare not tell SC that I’m seeing you on Thursday or she’ll be wanting to accompany us to the Dolce & Gabbana party! Please come back again soon! xxx p.s. I think your Marc Jacobs bow heels were perfect beach attire! xx

beaches… I remember those… from Australia! Favourite there is Noosa – powdery white sand, warm turquoise blue water and a rainforest steps away. I also have very fond memories of the beautiful Wineglass Bay in Tasmania as well. Oh, and Hamelin Bay in the south of WA. Mental note to arrange beach trip to the Hamptons sometime soon…

Beautiful photos my Love – which beach was this? I live near Dorset/New Forest?

My favourite beach has to be Myrtos in Kefalonia – perfect turquoise water, white sand, picturesque cliffs and a great beach bar ๐Ÿ™‚

LOL at your descriptions of the English seaside; my parents are both from the seaside and as a child I spent a lot of time in seaside towns… I remember donkey rides, sloppy icecreams and a grandfather who insisted we got rid of every grain of sand on our feet before being allowed in the house haha (grandma just ignored him and let us in anyway). My favourite beach is actually in Ibiza, it is Cala D’hort where there is amazing views and my favourite paella restaurant on the beach. Bliss. Lovely post and gorgeous colours on the photos.

Nothing especially fancy – just a Canon 1000d SLR. The trick is to always use it on manual rather than auto. Hope that helps

My favourite beaches in the UK are: Bamburgh beach in Northumberland, a huge swathe of pale sand and miles of dunes under the darkly brooding Bamburgh castle; and the north Norfolk beaches around Titchwell and Brancaster where I’ve spent some of my happiest days.
