A Girl, A Style

Snow Day

Lifestyle 6 February 2012

26

We’ve been having the most unseasonably mild winter here in England, so much so that I thought Spring pastels (expect this blog to go even more crazy about gelato pastels than normal come March…) were just a couple of weeks away. Silly me, I’d completely forgotten that the weather in Britain likes to play a game of ‘hard to get’ (just to keep us on our toes) so, I really shouldn’t have been quite so surprised by a mini-blizzard in February.

But when I awoke to the sight of the rooftops of Cambridge tucked beneath a thick blanket of a foot of fluffy snow Sunday morning, I literally bounced out of bed in glee (like a small over-active child). I think I managed to get dressed, pull on my shiny Hunter wellies (that, for all these blue skies, had been sitting rather unloved in my hallway until this point), drag The Clever Boyfriend with me and fly down the stairs and out the door in two minutes flat. And oh! The joy of being the first one to make it to all that pristine fluffy snow before anyone else had awoken to trample in it!

For the next two hours, we managed to throw enough snowballs at each other and build a sparkly snowlady dressed in my jewels (I named her Esmerelda) and every other snow-related cliche that we could muster.Β The weather bores can say what they like, but having both grown up in Australia (where snow is nothing more than a mythical fantasy), there is still something wonderfully magical and exciting about mornings like this where it feels as though new seasonal traditions can me made. Sometimes it really is life’s most simple pleasures such as these which make for the most wonderful memories.

And the best thing about playing in the snow early on a Sunday morning? Coming in to a cosy house and whipping up a stack of pancakes and steaming mugs of hot chocolate for brunch and then spending the rest of the day tucked indoors with a fresh copy of Vogue. There’s no hibernation quite like Snow Day hibernation!

Do you have your own winter traditions? How do you hibernate on cold, wintery weekends?

Love, Miss B xx

Oh yes, definitely! Winter kicked our collective behinds in the last days πŸ™‚ If I could get my car to work, it wouldn’t even be that bad. It is so sunny that I can almost believe it’s Spring… Looking outside the window, of course. Being outside is an entirely different story πŸ˜‰ It’s cool that you made it outside to play in the snow, I couldn’t imagine dragging myself out of bed for anything in subzero degrees!

I just knew you would “Do snow” with style!!! Love it!

The snow fluttered past us as it headed east. Didn’t really settle and left everything wet and grey. I shared your Vogue and hot chocolate moment but looking out at the rain. xx

Oh this made me smile πŸ˜€ Only you would dress a snowman up in jewels and have petals as eyes, love love love! I loved snow day, me my mum and sister had a massive snow fight, it was wonderful! and coming back into a warm house is heavenly, though I opted for hot soup and crusty bread, pancakes would have been better though! Gosh, they look SO good xxx

I loved this post (and the last one). Thanks so much for sharing your snow! I’ve been in Australia for a little over a year and a half now and I really miss the snow I used to get where I lived in upstate NY. Snow always makes me smile. πŸ™‚

My boyfriend and I (also antipodean’s) had a similarly playful day, although ours started on Saturday night with a stomp home in the snow after a few red wines in a gorgeously cosy pub! There was something so cheering about seeing snow, which makes EVERYWHERE look prettier, all the families out enjoying it together and of course plenty of puppy dogs not quite knowing what to think about all this cold, wet, white covering! It’s times like this when you want to cling onto these overseas adventure memories!

As you probably know (I posted a million pics on instagram!) Rome turned into a winter wonderland too this weekend. This is a really extraordinary event (about once every 25years), so I can perfectly understand the excitement of someone not accustomed to snow and cheerful activities related to it! My weekend was indeed incredibly similar to yours, (minus the Clever Boyfriend..)

The weather is like that here on the east coast as well. It’ll be so pretty one day, and then all of a sudden snow. It’s awful.
